TITLE: Gabapentin--Psychoactive & Abusable?
TYPE: Personal Experience
GENDER: Male
I wanted to share my experience with Gabapentin. About 3 years ago I was prescribed Neurontin for Fibromyalgia. I soon discovered that it seems to have psychoactive properties. Specifically, it appears to induce a narcotic-like sense of euphoria and well-being. While Gabapentin does help with my sleep, and (only) occassionally my pain, I find myself taking it to get 'high', rather than for the reason it was originally prescribed. I must add, I do NOT have a history of addiction. Though Parke-Davis maintains Gabapentin is not a drug of abuse, I must disagree; I think it is, and should either be taken off the market, or have a warning listed in the prescribing information about potential psychological dependence of the drug. Any opinions or information on this matter is welcome.

I have been on high doses of narcotics and others and now finally; neurotin added to hydrocodone and soma. Now my wonder dr is demanding I go to a drug detox and ween me off of my pain meds. I have noticed alot of differant things since; I have been on the neurotin, I can't think clearly, my balance is off, I'm moody as hell, and now I seem to be getting alot of headaches. I never got headaches before this wonderful drug!!!! Any info you can give me would be highly appreciated, I'm battling work comp dr's left and right. Thanks, Debra

HELP! I can't think clear and I'm dealing with cronic pain and so many other things; all due to my injury. ( I had to go back and re-write this because; my memory is so bad and I have a hard time thinking clearly. I noticed I put in my phone number which is a no-no; I am sorry for that and will correct it now.) I had an injury to my c4/c5 in my neck and was missdiagnosed for almost five months. In the process of all of this I have been on numerous medications before and after the operation. The last drug I was put on along with the Neurontin, was hydrocodone and soma. I have contionously; dealt with work comp doctors and have been through hell and back! My last dr and work comp sent me out of state to the newest and best so called physical theraphy etc. hospital; to get the best of best care and rehubilitaion. The main aggenda was to put me into a detox hospital to detox me off the hydro and soma, nothing ever mentioned in regards to the Neurontin, make sense out of that one. The side effects of this drug has created so many different things that; I thought I was loosing my mind. dry mouth, upset stomach,DECREASED COORDINATION,ON AND OFF FEVER, SWELLING OF ANKLES,AND HANDS,MEMORY LOSS AND TROUBLE SPEAKING. I also have had a balance problem. These are the bulk of what I now deal with on this drug. Sure it has helped with the terrible burning in my arms, hands and feet; but not completly. So, their goal is to take away two of the drugs that where controlling my pain; well atleast to the point that I wasn't over the edge; but never completly took it away. Then they put me on Neurontin and left me on my own to figure out the side effects. All they wanted to hear was; I'm better and ready to go back to work. They are the drug pushers; but they can get away with it because it's legal. Yes, I know for a fact now that all these side effects are do to the Neurontin, not the hydro or soma. I have for the last two months slowly weening myself off the hydro and soma; since I have been on the Neurontin; and I too get a high feeling, out of body, spacy feeling; along with all the other side effects, I mentioned earlier. Sorry, for taking some much time, but I have been through so much since the accident, sixteen months ago; that I could write a book on it. I have tryed to keep this as brief as possible, to relay to whom ever; my experiance with this drug. Thank you for listening. Debra

Although Neurontin is NOT a controlled subsance or narcotic nor a benzodiadepine, it can cause a sleepy-like relaxed feeling that a small percentage of people find "euphoric" or "addicting". Although rare, you shold be careful not to take Neurontin/gabapentin for the wrong reasons. Otherwise, you may find yourself needing more and more of the drug to get that feeling you're searching for. This can be particularly troubling to the kidneys and/or urinary system if the drug is abused because the drug is not significantly metabolized by the liver as most other drugs are. Luckily weening down and discontiuation of Neurontin is not really serious or painful withdrawal such as benzos like Xanax, Ativan, Valium, or Klonopin. However, withdrawal from a medication is all relative to the individual and past withdrawal experiences; and you may experience some discomfort.
